Billie Jean Lewis, age 79, of Okay, OK, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital in Muskogee, OK. She was born on April 19, 1946, in Midwest City, OK to Bill and Ina Ophelia (Morgan) Hales. Billie's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, family, and service.
Billie attended Warner Schools and graduated from Warner High School in 1964. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Bacone College, where she furthered her education, laying the groundwork for a life of accomplishment and community involvement.
In 1964, Billie married the love of her life, Robert Lee "Buddy" Lewis, in a union that would be filled with joy, song, and the laughter of children and grandchildren. Together, they built a life that was a source of inspiration to all who knew them. Billie's dedication to her family was unwavering, and she was the heart of a home that was always filled with love and care.
Professionally, Billie served with distinction at the Veterans Administration in Muskogee, OK, where she worked in account services for 20 years. Her commitment to those who served our country was evident in her diligent work until her retirement in February 2020. Her colleagues remember her as a woman of integrity and kindness, whose presence brightened the workplace.
Billie's interests and talents were many and varied. She had a passion for crocheting, a skill she used to create beautiful gifts for her loved ones. Garage sales and sewing were among her favorite pastimes, and her creative spirit was evident in everything she touched. Above all, Billie loved singing, and her beautiful voice was a gift she shared generously, lifting the spirits of all who heard her. Billie loved Jesus, and she took comfort in the knowledge that she was bound for her heavenly home.
Family was the cornerstone of Billie's life, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her devoted children, Melinda Tye and husband Michael of Muskogee, OK, and Johnny Lewis and wife Glenna of Muskogee, OK; four grandchildren, Brandon, Gracie, Sadie, and Evie Lewis; four great-grandchildren, Titus, Alijah, Kaydence, and Kyree; her sister, Jackie Shanks and husband Buck of Webbers Falls, OK; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law.
Billie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Lee "Buddy" Lewis, her parents, Bill and Ina Hales, her sisters, Carolyn Mullins and Linda Sharon Hales, and her nephew, Sammy Douglas McDonald.
Billie will be remembered as a woman of grace, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her legacy of love, laughter, and song will echo through the generations, and her memory will be cherished forever.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Billie's life will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Warner Memorial Cemetery in Warner, OK.
