Joyce graduated from Siloam Springs High School in 1954. She went to Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois for 2 years. She was accepted into the 3-year nursing program at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1956, graduating in 1959. She then returned for one semester at Greenville College to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She loved to travel, even hopping on a plane to Seattle, Washington after her 90th birthday to visit her sister, Charlotte.

Joyce has been a lifelong attendee of Free Methodist churches and has been a member of the Midwest City Free Methodist Church since October 1966, where she served in countless roles.

Joyce met the love of her life, James B. Farley, on a blind skate date on June 30, 1961 and would wed on June 9, 1962. They were blessed with four children: Jennifer Lynn, James Michael, John Wesley and Jeffery Martin Farley.
