William Howell Monroe Shaffner, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and steadfast pillar of strength, passed peacefully at his home in Choctaw, Oklahoma, on February 24, 2026, with his son Zack faithfully by his side.
Born on November 16, 1945, in Prague, Oklahoma, William was raised with the values of hard work, loyalty, and quiet resilience that would define his life. From an early age, he understood responsibility and carried it without complaint.
He proudly served in the 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma Army National Guard as a field artilleryman. That service reflected the discipline and steadiness that marked his character for the rest of his days. Additionally, William dedicated 40 years as a civil servant at Tinker Air Force Base, retiring in 2004. His four decades of service were a testament to his work ethic, reliability, and commitment to supporting a mission larger than himself.
William married the love of his life, Bonnie Sue Shaffner, on September 3, 1966. Together they shared 59 years of marriage. Their life together was rooted in endurance and commitment — to each other and to their family. Bonnie preceded him in death on April 16, 2025. What was separated for a time is now restored.
An avid outdoorsman and hunter, William found peace under open skies and among the quiet strength of the land. He valued patience, discipline, and self-reliance. He loved his family deeply — not always with many words, but through provision, protection, and presence. His strength was steady, grounded, and enduring.
He is survived by his son, Zack Shaffner; his daughter, Rebekah Newman; and his son, Shane Williams; his nine beloved grandchildren, Madelyn, Hannah, Kale, Elliot, Catherine, Elizabeth, Victoria, Brady, and Thad; and his three great-grandchildren, Adonis, Windsor, and Evelyn.
William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bonnie; his parents Clyde and Flossie; and his sisters, Phyllis and Sue.
His life was a testament to endurance, responsibility, and steadfast love. He leaves behind a legacy of strength and loyalty that will continue to shape his family for generations to come.
William’s family will honor him in a private memorial, celebrating his life, his service, and the quiet but powerful foundation he built.
"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love." 1 Corinthians 16:13–14
